Trevor Patterson talks about his capture of 3 Scales from the Road Lake

I turned up at the road lake it was a warm afternoon and after walking around the lake I saw a few carp milling around on the top down in the swim called “the grassy knowle”. So I quietly set my tackle up while putting a few baits out on the top.

One of my friends Gary came round and whilst sitting having a cuppa I noticed carp coming into a spot 5yrds from the margin. I got on my knees and crawled to the edge of the bank to get a better look without spooking the fish, and noticed a big fish coming up from the spot bubbles coming from his gills “he’s munching my mate said”. I could see that but what? As I hadn’t put any bait there and we couldn’t see any bait there, so it had to be naturals. I crept from the bank and got a rod baited up ready to go. I put some pop up foam on that Adam another member had given me waited for the carp to move off and placed the bait on the spot. It was hard, although I couldn’t see any silt or gravel just a bit of sparse weed I was happy with it.

We sat back and put the kettle on again After about twenty minutes we had seen at least 6 different fish visit the spot some stockies, and a couple of good fish with them. Jamie a mate came round for a cuppa and noticed the bag of pop up foam I had with me and ask if I had tried it out as it stayed on the hook for ages.  I hadn’t tried it before now, that got me going, was the foam still on and that’s why the visiting carp hadn’t picked my hook bait up?!.  I didn’t really take any notice of the foam popping up, so decided to reel in and check, as I lifted the rod the foam pop up from the spot!, it must have been on a good hour by now. I was gutted, had I missed my opportunity? Gary and Jamie walked off laughing, I saw the funny side. I checked the bait and just droped it straight back on the spot, this time without the pop up foam. I then turned my attention to the carp that was on the surface. Only a couple of minutes had past and the alarm beeped a couple of times then tore off. I couldn’t believe it I had only just put it back in, after a 10-minute scrap the carp rolled into my net. I looked down and saw which carp it was and screamed at the top of my voice “ 3 SCALES!! “ as I knew this fish is a 35+ and it would break my p.b. I was ecstatic. Gary and Jamie came round to see what the fuss was all about. And to see their faces when they realized what rod it was on I had the last laugh.
